Alexis Sanchez is expected to miss the start of the Premier League season after picking up an injury on international duty with Chile.
The Manchester United outcast endured a nightmare 2018-19 season, and it ended on a sour note as he limped off with a hamstring injury 17 minutes into Chile’s defeat to Argentina in the Copa America third-place play-off – a game shrouded by controversy stirred up by Lionel Messi.
The full extent of Sanchez’s injury is not yet known, but, as was expected anyway due to his involvement in the Copa America, he has not been included in the squad list for the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of Australia.
United are looking to sell the 30-year-old after his disappointing stint at Old Trafford, but are struggling to find a buyer willing to pay his £500,000-per-week wages. The injury will no doubt complicate that process even further.
So far, the only offers have come from China and South America – with Brazilian outfit Palmeiras seeing an ambitious loan bid, which would have seen United still pay a large portion of the winger’s wages, rejected.
Antonio Conte was quizzed on links with Sanchez at his new club Inter Milan – with the Chilean having previously spent three years in Italy with Udinese – but the former Chelsea boss insisted he was the wrong person to ask about the speculation.
