Sane to Bayern would be a disaster – but not for Man City

Former Bayern Munich stalwart Willy Sagnol believes the Bavarian giants would be making a huge mistake if they acted upon their long-standing interest in Man City ace Leroy Sane.

Sane, 24, has developed into one of the most exciting attacking talents the Premier League has to offer while at The Etihad.

Despite this, rumours of a return to his native Germany have never been far away, with Bayern closely monitoring the situation at the beginning of the season.

A torn ACL injury suffered during their Community Shield victory over Liverpool in August put an end to the speculation.

However, with Raheem Sterling a firm Pep Guardiola favourite and Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez looking as deadly as ever prior to football’s hiatus, Sane may find the path back to the starting eleven trickier than some may expect.

Bayern have long been admirers of the forward, and initially intended to have Sane become the long-term replacement to the departed club legends Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery last summer.

However, former France right-back Willy Sagnol – a veteran of nine years in Bavaria – believes Sane is the last thing the Bundesliga champions-in-waiting should be seeking in the transfer window.

“He doesn’t correspond at all to Bayern in terms of his character,” Sagnol told RMC (via Goal) of Sane.

“He’s someone whose form is very inconsistent and who is very withdrawn.

“For me, he doesn’t suit the club at all. He’s had a lot of problems at Manchester City and with the national team.”

Prising Sane away from Manchester would undoubtedly require a huge sum, and Sagnol believes Bayern would be better looking closer to home if they are willing to sanction a blockbuster purchase.

“We’re talking about a cost of €80 million (£72m/$89m).

“In that case, I would prefer to put another €20m down and sign Kai Havertz.”
