Arsenal are reported to have made contact with Zenit St Petersburg over the availability of attacking sensation Sardar Azmoun.

Azmoun, a 25-year-old Iranian, has long been on the radar of Premier League clubs due to his silky skills and his impressive record in front of goal, which have drawn comprisons to Lionel Messi.

And it looks like his talents could finally be witnessed in the Premier League with reports in Italy shedding light on Arsenal talks to bring the player to Emirates Stadium.

And key to the deal is said to be Gunners manager Mikel Arteta’s friendship with Andrey Arshavin, with the latter now in charge of transfers at the Russian side.

According to Area Napoli, the pair have been in touch with regards a move for Azmoun with the outlet claiming Arsenal were first offered first dibs on the striker back in April.

While those preliminary talks did not lead to an agreement being struck, the report – which has been translated by Sport Witness –  now claims Arteta and Arshavin are staging further talks over the player to gauge just how much Zenit would want for the player and as the Arsenal boss looks to bolster his attack.

The report adds that Arsenal are still ascertaining whether Azmoun would be a shrewd addition to their ranks and could become a success in the Premier League.

However, it states that were they to push through with their interest, Arshavin could help fast-track negotiations between the two clubs.

Arteta has fears he could lose star man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer with Thursday’s Paper Talk claiming Chelsea are ready to secure a £30m swoop on their rivals for the prolific Gabon frontman.

Arteta could also lose his attacking partner Alexandre Lacazette, with the likes of Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid said to be considering moves.

Azmoun revered in his homeland

Azmoun – who has been previously linked with Liverpool – has 26 goals in 45 appearances for Zenit, whom he joined from Rubin Kazan, having also played for Rostov prior to that.

The Iranian is hugely revered in his homeland and there’s little doubting a move to Emirates would be big news for the country were the transfer to go through.

In other Arsenal news, the Gunners have been told that a swap deal is off the table and that the asking price for a Roma star stands at €40million.
