The long-serving defender, who joined the Spireites in 2009, was set to be out of contract this summer but last week signed a new one-year deal at the Proact Stadium.

Talbot missed the first half of the 2014/15 season through injury, but the 28-year-old was always going to be part on new boss Saunders’ plans.

“I’ve always liked him and I’ve tried to sign him a couple of times. I tried to sign him when I was at Doncaster,” said Saunders, who replaced Paul Cook just over two weeks ago.

“[Goalkeeping coach] Mark Crossley spoke highly of him as well, he’s got good character and you can’t have enough players with his mentality and attitude at your club.

“He can also play anywhere, and that’s good, so I’m really pleased with that. I’ve told him he’s part of my plans, he could have got more money elsewhere but he decided to stay with us.

“He loves the club, which is great, and the supporters like him – so that’s a positive for us.”
