Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel launched a scathing attack on certain people within his former side’s squad, labelling the actions of one star as ‘shocking.’
The Red Devils have recently begun to show signs of genuine progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
A 16 match unbeaten run spearheaded by Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes has revitalised the club. While mouths have been watering over the potency of their vibrant front three.
However, despite the upturn in fortune, former treble-winning goalkeeper Schmeichel believes Solskjaer still has a big task ahead of him in weeding out weaker and questionable elements of the squad.
The Dane believes that some Man Utd stars have become too preoccupied with off-field actions such as brand building.
The 27-year-old is yet to play a part in Utd’s Premier League campaign since the restart, and has gained fame in recent times for his ‘JLingz’ clothing label, as well as running his own fragrance and mobile phone cases operations.
Speaking on MUTV’s Group Chat on Tuesday (via The Metro), Schmeichel said: “I’m on record for saying this a long, long time, since Ole came, that his most important job is not really to sign players, it’s to get rid of players.
“There’s a few players in the squad that we absolutely do not want there.
“They’re not there to play for the badge. They’re there to create a profile for themselves.
“I was reading about one player trying to make themself a brand like Beckham which is shocking really.
“But there are players there that do not belong in the dressing room.
“And I think Ole has done really well in kind of sifting them out of the picture really, so we only get reminded that they’re there in a chat like this, or reading about the squad. I think he’s done an amazing job.”
Lingard on the move?
Meanwhile, Lingard has reportedly emerged as a summer transfer target for former boss David Moyes at West Ham.
The Independent reports that Moyes will be allowed to build his squad this summer if he staves off the threat of relegation
Lingard, along with one other out of favour Utd star have been cited by the publication as potential additions for the London club.
