Scholes hails ‘awkward’ Matic; mocks Gerrard without speaking

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes mocked Steven Gerrard without saying a word last night.
Scholes, 42, and ex-Liverpool man Gerrard, 37, were in the BT Sport studio together for last night’s Champions League coverage and when Gerrard referred to himself never winning the Champions League, Scholes’ face was a picture.
Scholes did not say a word but the slight turning up of his mouth spoke volumes as he allowed himself a grin at Gerrard’s expense.
The United man was then asked about Nemanja Matic’s contribution to the club since his £40million arrival from Chelsea this summer. And he explained why the 29-year-old Matic is such a tricky opponent to come up against.
Scholes told BT Sport: “He’s just one of them awkward players. Tall lad, long legs – he’s very difficult to get past.
“He’s had a great start at United. He’s been aggressive, he gets to the ball, he tackles. He’s done well so far.”
Matic has made 12 appearances for United and remains unbeaten in domestic competition, with his only defeat coming against Real Madrid in the Super Cup.
