Serge Aurier has urged Tottenham not to get too far ahead of themselves when thinking about a potential title challenge, but admits they want to be “in the conversation”.

Tottenham sit top of the Premier League table after picking up 20 points from their opening nine games. It’s a tally only reigning champions Liverpool can match.

With Jose Mourinho leading Spurs for his first full season and Gareth Bale having returned to the club, as well as new signings like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon making an impression, there is renewed optimism that they could challenge near the top.

Tottenham are one of the biggest clubs not to have won the title in the Premier League era. Last season, they only managed a disappointing sixth-place finish – which even looked optimistic after a surprisingly poor start to the season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Mourinho came in to rally the troops, though, and eventually led them to European qualification. And after bolstering his squad in the summer, they have started the new campaign in fine form.

There have already been several claims that Tottenham could not just return to the top four, but even challenge for the title this season – and their players know it.

They have done their credentials no harm by securing big wins over both Manchester clubs, for example. They thrashed United 6-1 earlier in the season and, most recently, beat 2019 champions City 2-0.

That result put Tottenham top of the table, a position they would love to be in by the end of the season.

Indeed, Aurier* admits that they want to be in contention by the end of the season – but maintains it is important to keep their focus and not get too carried away.

“The objective is to try to stay there for as long as possible,” he told RMC Sport.

“We are very happy about what is going on and our position because we deserve to be top of the table.

“And I can’t forget that we dropped some points stupidly at home against West Ham or Newcastle.

“It is too early to think about the title. We can’t rush anything. A couple of weeks ago Southampton were top, then it was Leicester. Now it is us.

“We want to be in the conversation – and we are. We have big games coming up and we want more results like against City.”

‘Something special happening’

Aurier is now in his fourth season with Tottenham. After all this time, he admits he is noticing a positive change at the club this season.

The full-back added: “I can feel there is something special happening here. I am not a dreamer; I take things as they happen.

“We are all on the same page. We work together, we win together – one day we will lose together, but we will have to stay united.

“I am not a dreamer – but I would like to dream that at the end of the season we will be happy and rewarded at last.”
