Sergio Aguero TEAMtalk

Sergio Aguero says his future at Manchester City is unclear and admitted “I don’t know what to do yet” with his contract running down at The Etihad.

City’s all-time leading goalscorer will see his current deal expire this summer. The striker extended his contract with City by another year in 2018 and that comes to a conclusion at the end of June.

The 32-year-old has made just five appearances this season due to injuries and contracting Covid-19. However, the legendary striker has been back on the bench in the last two games. But has yet to appear for City, who top the Premier League table, since January 3.

Somewhat surprisingly City have climbed to the summit without him.  Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva have all found their form over the last few months.

Still it’s understood City and Pep Guardiola would love to be able to call on Aguero next season.

Guardiola told a news conference in November that Aguero had earned the right to request a new contract.

“He is a guy who deserves with the club, fair talks to do what is the best for him, for the club and for everyone,” Guardiola said.

“In that you should not doubt. As I said many times, I was lucky to play as a football player and manager with incredible football players.

“He is one of these ones, for sure. But especially as a human being. I never found a bigger star like him to be like Sergio is.”

Aguero though, in a chat with Spanish internet celebrity Ibai Llanos, says he has yet to make up his mind on his future. And he regrets publicly admitting he wanted to leave Atletico Madrid.

“There were other offers then, but I was at the 2011 Copa América. I made the decision after the Copa and I had to return to Atlético to train and I had already said I wanted to go,” Marca quoted him as saying (via Sport Witness).

Guardiola praise

“But saying publicly that I wanted to leave the club was a mistake. The [Estadio Vicente] Calderón was incredible, a tremendous pitch.”

Aguero’s focus is to get back playing for Guardiola.

“I finish my contract at the end of the season and I don’t know what to do yet. The first thing I want to do is play and at the end of the season we will see,” he said, while praising Guardiola.

“He is very detailed. With him, I have improved a lot at the football level and many Premier League clubs have wanted to copy his style, starting to play from the back. He is very good,” said Aguero.

Speaking about his £35m move to City in 2011, he added: “Zabaleta and Tevez were at the club, he couldn’t even say hello in English and David Silva, even Balotelli, spoke Spanish. Balotelli was pure raw talent, but he was hot-headed and that sometimes in football makes you do things that you don’t think well.”
