Shock Ramos decision is encouraging news for Man Utd

Sergio Ramos TEAMtalk

Reports in Spain claim Sergio Ramos’ decision to undergo surgery at a critical time of the season proves his head has been turned by thoughts of a summer move.

Ramos, 34, has been with Los Blancos since joining from Sevilla in the summer of 2005. Already a legend, he has notched up 668 appearances in all competitions.

The veteran has also chipped in with 100 goals – an incredible statistic for a centre-back. But it seems as though his days in the Spanish capital are now numbered.

He will be out of action for at least six weeks after undergoing knee surgery. And the man with 178 Spain caps felt there was no alternative to an operation.

“In the end, I had to undergo surgery,” he said on social media. “No one likes to be in that situation but, thanks to God, everything has turned out great.

“It was on medical advice and I had no other option. I just wanted to say that I’m happy with how everything has turned out and that I’ll try get back as soon as possible to help the team because there’s still a long way to go this season.”

He will miss Real’s Champions League last-16 clash with Atalanta and the quarter-finals if they advance. The Bernabeu giants are trying to overhaul Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are second but five points behind their city rivals, who have two games in hand. Therefore, questions have been asked as to why he would go under the surgeon’s knife this month.

Don Balon are suggesting the answer may lie in the fact his agent and brother, Rene, is planning a trip to Manchester. Ramos will be a free agent in the summer and United head the queue for his signature.

He will reportedly receive £200,000 per week after signing a two-year deal. And that is the reason cited why he opted for surgery now rather than at the end of the campaign.

Solskjaer hints at Ramos move

United do have form in signing players well past their 30th birthday. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani are both recent examples.

The duo performed well for the Old Trafford outfit despite their advancing years. Cavani may well be offered a new deal when the current season concludes.

Solskjaer was asked about signing older players and used an example from American football as to why it can be advantageous.

“For me, the big learning from that one is maybe the Tom Brady story,” he said. “What he does to keep going at such an age and to be so professional.

“He’s come into the club and he’s brought them to the Super Bowl. It’s not him by himself of course. We tell our young players to be at the top level that it’s not just natural talent. But it’s dedication, hard work, focus.”
