Veteran says goodbye to Man Utd as teammate prepares for identical exit

Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero Man Utd

Sergio Romero may not have only played his last game for Manchester United, but also taken part in his last training session for the club, it is claimed.

The United goalkeeper has been heavily linked with an exit in recent months. He was left out of their Premier League and Champions League squads after Dean Henderson returned from his loan at Sheffield United.

Romero had been unhappy even before then. The Argentine was angry that he did not get to play in cup semi-finals for United last season after featuring heavily in previous rounds.

United were accused of a lack of respect to the 33-year-old, who has been on the lookout for a new club ever since.

Romero’s wishes for an exit seem to be accelerating. According to Manchester Evening News, the keeper has already said his goodbyes to club staff.

The report states that Romero has not taken part in training for United since the New Year began. In fact, he may not even be in the country.

It has been claimed that Romero is back in his native Argentina. There are rumours he could move to Boca Juniors, so he is training in Buenos Aires.

United are aware of this and have given him permission to train in South America. However, they have told him he should report back to Carrington if a transfer does not happen this month.

It is increasingly likely that Romero’s future lies away from Old Trafford, though. Even if he cannot depart in January, he is out of contract at the end of the season.

United can extend his contract by one year, but are unlikely to do so.

Romero is believed to earn £70,000 per week in wages. That is not a worthwhile investment for United, considering he has not played a Premier League game since May 2018.

Therefore, his six-year stint in Manchester could be coming to an end.

Marcos Rojo also to depart

Another long-serving player coming to the end of his United career is fellow Argentine Marcos Rojo.

The report adds that the defender, without a game for the club since November 2019, is also in Argentina to seek a potential transfer.

Previous reports have suggested that the 31-year-old is close to finding an agreement with Boca Juniors as well.

There have been rumours of interest from elsewhere, including in the Premier League. However, it seems both players could make the same move away from United.
