Manchester United could loan midfielder Fred to Roma just one year after his big-money arrival, reports in Italy claim.

The Brazil midfielder had a tough first season at Old Trafford, making just 13 starts in the Premier League after his £52million move from Shakhtar Donetsk, scoring once.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to strengthen his midfield and even though Ander Herrera has left the club and Paul Pogba’s future remains uncertain, it seems United are happy to let Fred leave the club, initially on loan.

Our friends at Sport Witness have flagged up reports in Italy suggesting that new Roma coach Paulo Fonseca wants to be reunited with Fred after managing the 26-year-old while in charge at Shakhtar.

Fred would not ‘put his foot down’ if United were keen on sending him to Serie A.

The stories suggest any deal could involve a loan with an option for Roma to buy the midfielder.
