AC Milan are poised to reignite their interest in a January move for Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren – claims a report in the Italian media.

The Croatian international was a target for the Rossoneri in the summer, with a potential move reportedly reaching advanced stages before Jurgen Klopp pulled the plug on the deal due to squad depth concerns.

The 30-year-old has had to settle for the role of fourth-choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez – a position that Lovren admitted he was struggling to come to terms with.

Since joining the Reds in 2014, Lovren has been a divisive figure among Liverpool fans, with periods of sustained high form interspersed with rash moments and calamitous blunders.

Since van Dijk’s arrival on Merseyside, however, the Croatian’s form has improved, albeit in fewer opportunities including just four starts across all competitions this term.

 

 

Now, a report from Italian newspaper TuttoSport (via Serie A supremos SempreMilan) has announced that ‘Milan could return with a fresh bid for Lovren’ should centre-half Mattia Caldara’s ‘return to action not go according to plan.’

With the latest injury to Matip providing a reminder of how quickly the landscape can change, Klopp is expected to remain steadfast in his resolve to keep Lovren at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
