Man Utd urged to bin star who doesn’t cut it and become ‘real team’

Manchester United should “seriously” consider getting rid of Daniel James and signing Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland to become a “real team”, according to Lee Sharpe.

United have had a new attacking signing on their radar for some time now.

While they signed Edinson Cavani on last October’s deadline day, the Uruguayan was not their top target.

Instead, the Red Devils wanted Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho all summer, but his £108million exit fee put them off.

They also tried to sign his star Dortmund team-mate Haaland before he moved to Germany in December 2019.

Fast forward to the present day and ex-United man Sharpe feels that both deals would prove crucial if his former club are to return to the heights of English football.

Indeed, he urged boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to cast Daniel James aside in the process.

“There are always areas on the pitch you can strengthen as a side and I think the two lads currently playing for Dortmund, Man United should seriously be looking at,” the pundit told Ladbrokes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: I keep in touch with Erling Haaland

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he keeps in touch with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland but is happy with Manchester United's recruitment model.

“Jadon Sancho on the right – I think United are still lacking real quality out in that position.

“Mason Greenwood has filled in and Daniel James has come in and had a good month, but I still think they need to improve on that position if they want to be challenging for titles and Champions Leagues.”

Sharpe added that while Anthony Martial can be a “world-beater”, the Frenchman and fitness-hampered Edinson Cavani lack the consistency Haaland has shown since his explosive rise.

“If they were to go out and get those two names in, then they wouldn’t be far off being a real team,” Sharpe added.

Man Utd urged to ditch James

Meanwhile, winger James fulfilled a boyhood dream by signing for United in 2019, months after a move to Leeds collapsed.

While he has shown bursts of his raw talent since then, Sharpe does not think that the 23-year-old is in the calibre of player United should be targeting.

“Daniel James has come from Swansea, jumped up a division to come and play at Old Trafford. He’s still young, he’s raw and he’s got a lot to learn. But he’s just not at the same level as the kind of players United should be looking to sign and start every week, like Jadon Sancho,” the pundit said.

“I don’t think United are far off being a title-winning side at all, really. When you’re in that position, you’ve first and foremost got to make sure that you’re structurally sound in defence and I think they’ve got that.

“If they can bring in Sancho and Haaland, then you don’t need me to tell you they’d have a forward and attacking midfield line as good as anyone’s in the world.”

While Sharpe believes United have solidity at the back, reports suggest that a new centre-back is the top priority next summer.

Meanwhile, United are reportedly plotting a £50million summer sale.
