Sheridan buoyed by fightback

The Chairboys looked to be in control of the League Two play-off semi-final as they opened up a 3-0 lead in the first leg at Home Park.

But two goals in the final five minutes dragged Plymouth back into the tie ahead of the return leg at Adams Park on Thursday.

“I was pleased the way we played first half,” said Sheridan. “To find ourselves 2-0 down was tough and at 3-0 everyone is down and out, but full credit to the players, they responded really well and they have given us a chance.

“The subs have got two goals and we can go there believing. At 3-0 you think it’s all over but at 3-2 we are right back in the tie.

“We had to find something, I couldn’t see us scoring, it’s very hard when you go 3-0 down but the fans were brilliant tonight and lifted us.”

While Plymouth managed to reduce the deficit with the late goals, Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth says he would have taken any win at the start of the day.

“We would have taken that this morning,” he said. “At times it looked like we could have a 3-0 lead but nobody has come here and scored three at Home Park this season so I am really proud of the boys, we knew they would have chances and they came back and took them well.

“The momentum has stopped for them and we start again on Thursday with a 1-0 lead, that’s great going into the game but we have to cut out the mistakes and capitalise at the other end.”
