Sigurdsson happy to end drought for Swansea

Gylfi Sigurdsson says he was happy to end his wait for a goal this season against Southampton, but lamented Swansea’s performance in defeat.

Sigurdsson scored a consolation penalty in Swansea’s 3-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday, with the goal representing the midfielder’s first in all competitions this season.

The Iceland international scored nine goals in 35 appearances for Swansea last season, and admitted that though he was relieved to end this particular drought, it was soured by the club’s overall performance against Saints.

“Of course it’s nice to be off the mark, and hopefully I can kick on now and score a bit more,” he said.

“The pressure is off me a little bit now so I think more goals will come, but we’re in this business to win games and get points.

“Whether I score or not, I want to get the three points.

“The happiness of the goal kind of fades away because of the performance against Southampton.”

Swansea are now without a victory since beating Manchester United in late August, and face a test against one of Sigurdsson’s former club next in Spurs, who are unbeaten since a defeat on the opening day.

Sigurdsson hopes Garry Monk’s men can rekindle their early-season form at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

“I think we’ve just come away from what we want,” he added.

“We started the season working very hard and we scored a few goals in those early games.

“At the moment the goals are proving a bit hard to come by for us. It’s something we’ll work on and hopefully we can get a good result against Tottenham before the international break.

“We just need to start the game better than we did at Southampton.

“We were on the back foot and they scored from a set-piece, which we’re very disappointed about. I think deservedly they got the points.”
