Simeone rages at Arteta after Partey, Torreira plan ruined by Arsenal

Diego Simeone: Arsenal talk played down

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is reportedly raging at Arsenal after their last-gasp swoop for Thomas Partey.

The Gunners had identified Partey as a top midfield target, as well as Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.

However after failing to reach Lyon’s asking price for the Frenchman, Mikel Arteta’s side made a late move for Partey.

Arsenal triggered the £45million release clause in his contract late on Monday afternoon, a move that was confirmed by Atletico on Monday evening.

Having refused to lower their asking price for Partey, Simeone was said to be “so sure” that Arsenal would not trigger his exit clause.

So when it was confirmed to him by LaLiga that the Gunners had met his release fee late in the day, he was left seriously unimpressed.

Spanish outlet Libertad Digital explains the matter further. They state Simeone had even spoken to Lucas Torreira about a midfield partnership with Partey at Atletico.

The Argentine is reported to have spoken at length with the Uruguayan about how he saw him and Partey working in tandem for Atletico.

But after learning Arsenal had made their late play, it’s claimed Simeone was left “really angry”.

Partey will be bringing an end to his career in Spain after five years. He made a total of 188 appearances for the LaLiga side.

Arteta explains what Partey will bring

After sealing the signing, Gunners boss Arteta explained how Partey’s dynamism will help take his side to the next level.

Thomas Partey

Arteta told Arsenal’s official website: “We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad.

“He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. Thomas brings a lot of experience from a top club. He has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system. He can contribute to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”
