Inzaghi makes huge Liverpool claim – but reveals why Inter Milan still have belief

Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi insists his team should be proud of their display despite losing 2-0 at home to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
After a hard-fought goalless first half, Inter dominated proceedings for the first 20 minutes of the second half. From minute 46 to 65, the Nerazzurri had 67% possession and four shots to just one for The Reds. However, two goals from set-pieces proved the difference as Roberto Firmino headed home a corner. A Mohamed Salah strike eight minutes later from the second phase of a set-piece meant a 2-0 Inter Milan defeat.

Inzaghi told Amazon Prime Italia after the match: “We hope not to face Liverpool every game!”
“I am happy and proud of the team, unfortunately during our best period of the game we were not rewarded with the goal we deserved, then Liverpool scored at the first distraction we had.
“We certainly deserved more, but this performance has to augur well for what is to come in the future. Liverpool are one of the two best teams in Europe and in my view, Inter held out well and deserved more.
“We know these evenings can be like this, but it has to give us a self-esteem boost, because it was an excellent performance.
“It’s difficult to comment after a result like this, but it has to be a starting point for Inter at this level. I think this is the strongest opponent we’ve faced this season,” Inzaghi concluded.

Inzaghi, Dzeko, Skriniar bemoan Inter finishing
Inter Milan players Edin Dzeko and Milan Skriniar were in agreement that their side played well but paid a high price for their missed chances.
Dzeko said post-match: “The only thing we lacked was winning the game. We played so well for 65 minutes, had chances and allowed nothing to one of the best teams in Europe.
“It is a pity to concede from a corner, where usually we are strong. This is the problem against great sides, if you don’t take your chances, they will punish you eventually.
“We tried everything, everyone gave their all for 90 minutes. It was not enough. We leave this defeat with heads held high, because we know that we gave everything.”
Central defender Skriniar likened the defeat to one suffered against Real Madrid: “We dominated for stretches of the game and once again today saw that Inter can play against anyone.
“We did what we had to do and what we had prepared before the game.
“It was just like against Real Madrid, if you don’t put the ball in the net, sooner or later these top clubs will punish you on a set play and that’s exactly what happened again.”
