Solskjaer calls up duo for bench duty as Covid outbreak hits Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer TEAMtalk

Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at Old Trafford will go ahead on Sunday night, despite a Covid-19 outbreak in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Up to three members of Solskjaer’s backroom team have been forced to self-isolate after coming into close contact with an individual that had tested positive for coronavirus.

The coaches tested positive for Covid-19 and did not travel to Turin for Thursday’s 4-0 win against Real Sociedad.

In a brief statement, United confirmed that both Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey will join Solskjaer on the bench for the Toon clash.

“Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey will join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the bench this evening due to some of the coaching staff having to self isolate,” a statement read.

“The home Premier League game against Newcastle United at Old Trafford will kick off at 19:00 GMT.”

Solskjaer calls for help

Solskjaer’s backroom staff includes Mike Phelan, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, and Kieran McKenna. However, the fact that the services of Butt and Dempsey are required suggests that all four are in self-isolation.

United closed their training centre after the results of three positive tests and a deep clean was undetaken at Carrington.

However, United remain confident they have stopped the spread to any members of the playing staff.

The Red Devils will be hoping to take advantage of dropped points from top-four rivals Liverpool and Chelsea when they face Steve Bruce’s men.
