Dean Saunders suspects that the public don’t know the whole story behind Sergio Aguero’s benching at Manchester City.
The Argentinian had been dropped to the bench in recent weeks due to the form of Gabriel Jesus but with the Brazilian’s injury he’s likely to be restored to Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up.
But Saunders has questioned Aguero’s absence from the team and the former Liverpool player still rates him as the best striker in the Premier League.
“I don’t understand how Aguero’s not playing. He’s got 18 goals this season and 30 goals last season,” he said on Sky Sports News HQ’s Premier League Daily.
“If you said I could have one striker in the league it would be Aguero.
“Jesus is a good player but he’s 19. They’re chasing Chelsea and Aguero’s sat on the bench. I can’t argue with Pep Guardiola but there’s something more going on that we don’t know about.”
Fellow pundit Danny Higginbotham added: “Guardiola’s got the system he wants to play. When I look at the front three that Guardiola has always played whether it be at Bayern or Barcelona, other than [Robert] Lewandowski the players have all been really flexible.
“I think if you look at Aguero he’s a centre forward. He’s not going to drift out to the left or the right for twenty minutes.
“With Jesus, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling he’s got it exactly how he wants it because he wants players to be flexible.”
