Souness names ideal Prem transfer for Man Utd to reach next level

Maguire Lindelof De Gea TEAMtalk

Graeme Souness has pinpointed the defence of Man Utd as one area in need of drastic improvement, while naming a Premier League centre-half who would be the perfect signing.

Man Utd returned to action on Friday night with hopes high of mounting a charge for the top four.

A run of 11 matches unbeaten across all competitions had lifted spirits prior to football’s hiatus. Yet despite conceding just two goals across that span, their defence came in for fierce criticism after drawing 1-1 with Spurs.

Harry Maguire and David De Gea were both found wanting for Steven Bergwijn’s opener, and Souness believes surgery is required to the defensive ranks if the club are to challenge for the bigger trophies once more.

Writing in his column for The Times (via The Mirror), Souness wrote: “Luke Shaw has qualities at left back, but could still get himself leaner and meaner.

“While we’ll have to wait and see if Victor Lindelof will be Harry Maguire’s long-term partner at centre back.

Maguire was always going to make a big difference. He’s not Virgil van Dijk, but he’s a good player.

“I reckon Solskjaer is still going to be looking at it and questioning some people, asking himself: ‘Are they going to win me the Premier League or the Champions League?’”

One player who has caught the eye of the Scot this year is Leicester centre-back Caglar Soyuncu.

The Turkey international has blossomed since Maguire’s departure from The Foxes. And his solid and stable contributions have been a big factor in Leicester’s charge up the table.

“In terms of potential solutions, I like Caglar Soyuncu at Leicester City very much,” wrote Souness.

Soyuncu Deeney TEAMtalk

“The 24-year-old Turkey centre back is strong, quick and good on the ball but crucially also takes defending seriously.

“It’s not all about passing it out from the back and how he looks on the ball for him. He’s the standout signing for me this summer, the centre half they will all be after.”

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes may prove to be the difference for Man Utd, both on and off the pitch.

His influence could prove pivotal after Man Utd were reported to be eyeing up a swoop for a Portuguese starlet.
