Souness urges Man Utd to ignore Haaland and sign ‘proven performer’

Graeme Souness believes Manchester United should sign a ‘proven Premier League performer’ over the prolific Erling Haaland this summer.

The Red Devils have been strongly linked with moves for both Haaland and Tottenham frontman Harry Kane. The latter has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in European football over the past seven campaigns, scoring 219 goals in 330 appearances for Spurs.

As for Haaland, the Norwegian is currently regarded as the best young No.9 in world football. The 20-year-old, who is also wanted by Chelsea, has already notched an incredible 49 goals in just 53 games for Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool legend Souness believes United would become ‘real-contenders’ if they signed either attacker. However, he feels that England skipper Kane should be United’s first pick.

“For Manchester United to get closer to Manchester City next season, their priority this summer has to be to sign a top striker and it looks like a few may be on the market,” Souness told The Times.

“If they could get either Erling Haaland or Harry Kane, they would become real contenders.

“If you pushed me, I’d go for Kane, who turns 28 this summer, because he’s a proven performer in the Premier League and still has several years left at his peak. The only question mark is the ankle injuries he seems susceptible to.

“With Haaland, who is only 20, you will pay a premium for his enormous potential.

“We’ve seen Kai Havertz and Timo Werner do well in Germany, then come to Chelsea and find life more difficult in England.

“Will Haaland be like that? I don’t think so, because he’s more powerful and aggressive than they are, but he didn’t score in the two games against City and it’s a possibility.

“Would he be open to moving to Old Trafford? Maybe not, maybe he grew up disliking them because of what happened to his dad, Alf-Inge, who was seriously injured playing against them.”

However, at this stage it remains whether United will commit major funds to bringing in a new central striker, particularly given that a centre-half and a right-winger are likely to be their main positions of need.

Man Utd lead race for Metz star

Manchester United are at the front of the queue for Metz midfield starlet Pape Sarr, according to a report.

United have been focusing on signing promising young players in recent months. That strategy saw them bring in the likes of Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri in recent months. Now, Sarr could be one of the next names on their radar.

After coming through the Generation Foot academy in his native Senegal, Sarr moved to Metz in 2020. He has shown flashes of his potential in his debut season in Europe.

So far in 2020-21, Sarr has played in 18 games for Metz, including 12 appearances as a starter. He has scored three goals and earned his senior Senegal debut in March 2021.

According to The Sun, Man Utd are aware of his rapid rise and currently lead the race to snap him up.

Nice are also keen to give Sarr a different opportunity in France. However, the 18-year-old would rather join a bigger club if he leaves Metz. That could present an opportunity for United.

Sarr is under contract with Metz until 2025, but the Ligue 1 club know there is interest in many of their players. They may struggle to ward off interest from a club as big as Man Utd if they do come forward.
