Journalist Duncan Castles has claimed to reveal a stunning reference about rumoured Liverpool target Sven Botman from one of his teammates.

The Reds are supposedly targeting a new centre-back signing this month to fill their injury void.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all on the sidelines, the former two for some while longer.

As such, recent reports have named several players who Liverpool are keen on bringing in. Lille star Botman is among the more recent additions to that list amid his brilliant season.

The 20-year-old Dutchman has played every minute of Lille’s 17 Ligue 1 games to help the club sit joint-second in the top flight alongside Lyon.

According to Castles, talks between Liverpool and Lille about a deal are underway. What’s more, the journalist claimed to reveal Jose Fonte’s perspective on his centre-back colleague, which includes a comparison to Van Dijk and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

“One other thing I think will be interesting to Liverpool supporters is that Botman plays alongside veteran Portugal defender Jose Fonte at Lille this season,” Castles told the Transfer Window Podcast.

“Fonte has played with an array of top-class centre-backs in his career including Virgil van Dijk, Toby Alderweireld, Pepe in the Portuguese national team and Gabriel last season who is now at Arsenal.

“From what I understand of Fonte’s impression of Botman, he thinks he’s the best of all of them.

“He describes him as a machine and a man who doesn’t make mistakes and also indicates that for a young player playing alongside an experienced professional, he’s very open to learning and taking instruction and improving his game.”

Castles unsurprised at Liverpool interest

Castles added that it is unsurprising to see Liverpool show interest in Botman.

“These are attributes you look for in a signing and are the kind of attributes Liverpool have been very focused on when they’ve recruited players in the past,” he said.

“You can see why they’re having conversations there and you can see from the cost perspective why it seems to be a good potential fit for that January deal.”

Botman joined Lille in the summer from Ajax’s Under-21 ranks – such is the hype surrounding his impressive performances this term.
