South American star dreams of Liverpool move, claims Klopp made offer

Peruvian defender Carlos Zambrano has opened up on his dreams of signing for Liverpool – and claims he once had an offer from Jurgen Klopp to join the club.

The 30-year-old moved to Dynamo Kiev last January from Rubin Kazan – but the move is yet to work out with the centre-half yet to feature for his new side and being loaned out to FC Basel.

Despite that, Zambrano remains a regular for his country and with his career now taking a downward spiral, the much-travelled defender  – who started at Schalke and also made over 100 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt – has been left to reflect on what might have been.

In an interview with Movistar, relayed by Directvsports and via Sport Witness, Zambrano revealed he had offers from both Liverpool and Sevilla prior to his move away from the Bundesliga.

“It has always been a dream to play in Liverpool or Sevilla, and I had offers from both,” he claimed.

“The Sevilla could not happen because Frankfurt did not want to. I was in a good moment, and I was fine there, and it was not done.

“A week before the pre-season, Liverpool had injuries to all their central defenders.

Jurgen Klopp was already in the club and they asked me at that time, but a week before I had promised my coach that I stayed in the club and fight.”

Klopp, meanwhile, insists he is not scared of losing but the quest to improve means he occasionally “kills the mood” in his post-match debrief to players.

“You don’t fear losing in the situation we are in but you still know it is possible – it is one of three possible results. You win it, you draw, or you lose,” said Klopp.

“I am constantly really concerned about different things. It’s not that I want to be – I’d like an easy life but I don’t have it.

“I constantly try to make sure of increasing the probability to win a football game and there’s always the other team there.

“I am not sure what Arsene Wenger thought back in the days when they were the ‘Invincibles’, if he knew before the game they would win any way.

“It’s not like this for me unfortunately, it would be really cool if I knew it before the game. But I can only say we don’t fear losing, I never did, it is a possibility but I don’t fear it.

“I try to create as many solutions as possible to win the game, sometimes it works out, sometimes not.”

In other Liverpool news, Klopp is reported to be keeping tabs on two Norwich players who have caught his eye this season and one of whom narrowly trails Trent Alexander-Arnold in the assists table.
