Southampton will reportedly use a chunk of the £75m they collected for Virgil van Dijk to bring back a former favourite from Arsenal.

The Saints have asked Arsenal about the possibility of signing Theo Walcott either on loan or on a permanent basis, according to the Daily Mirror.

After receiving a world-record fee for defender Van Dijk, Southampton are ready to reinforce their squad  ahead of a potential relegation battle.

The report claims that the South coast club are ready to meet Walcott’s £140,000-a-week wage demands, but face competition from Everton and West Ham.

The 28-year-old joined Arsenal from the Saints eleven years ago for a fee of £12million after he became the club’s youngest ever player.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino claimed: “Obviously, we don’t have this money to go to the market to bring the best players in the world, but we have got our targets that we want to bring in with this money.

“We were (the board) talking about the couple of targets that we got. I would like to bring a couple of players minimum and we have to work for this.”
