The visitors have now won only once in 19 games after their second-half collapse at Saltergate – and are still looking for a first win under new manager Paul Simpson.

On-loan Sunderland striker David Dowson fired Chesterfield ahead as the visitors’ defence stood off two minutes into the second half.

Three minutes later Jamie Ward spectacularly volleyed the second from 20 yards and then raced clear of a static backline to net his 11th of the season.

Kevin McIntyre smashed his first goal for the Shrews nine minutes from time but Chesterfield completed the rout when Dowson grabbed his second in stoppage time after playing a neat one-two with Bruce Dyer.
