Thomas Partey has been labelled a ‘brilliant signing’ and has been tipped to have the same impact at Arsenal as one of their greats.
The Gunners had identified Partey as a top midfield target earlier in the summer, as well as Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
However after failing to reach Lyon’s asking price for the Frenchman, Mikel Arteta’s side made a late move for Partey.
Arsenal triggered the £45million release clause in his contract late on Monday afternoon. The move was then confirmed by Atletico on Monday evening, with minutes to spare.
However, the whole saga has left a bitter taste in Diego Simeone’s mouth. That’s after his dream midfield plans were wrecked at Atletico by the Gunners.
Partey himself has penned an emotional goodbye message to Atletico’s fans. Read what he had to say here…
The LaLiga side’s loss, however, is very much Arsenal’s gain.
And former Tottenham man Jamie O’Hara reckons he can replicate the success of Gunners legend Patrick Vieira.
O’Hara, speaking to talkSPORT, was asked if Partey’s signing can secure a return to Champions League football for Arsenal.
“You’d have to say yes, he’s fantastic signing,” O’Hara said.
“This season is obviously crazy with the results already happening and I think Arsenal look like a team that have a philosophy now with Mikel Arteta.
“I think they need a player like him, he was one of the missing pieces on their squad and they’ve addressed it.
“It’s a brilliant signing, he’s a very good player.
“I watched him when they played against Liverpool at Anfield last season. He was absolutely fantastic, he tore Liverpool apart.
“For me, he looks like a modern day Vieira, and I know that’s a big statement, but he looks the real deal, this guy.
“He’s a top signing.”
Arteta explains what Partey will bring
After sealing the signing, Gunners boss Arteta explained how Partey’s dynamism will help take his side to the next level.
Arteta told Arsenal’s official website: “We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad.
“He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. Thomas brings a lot of experience from a top club. He has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.
“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system. He can contribute to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”
