Spurs plot cut-price January raid for Porto man as Ajax bid fails

Tottenham are set to turn their attentions towards the signing of a Porto midfielder, having seen efforts to prise a young talent from Ajax fail.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino created history this summer by becoming the first club since the summer transfer was introduced to keep their powder dry, but there could be much more activity when the transfer window opens again on January 1.

According to reports in Spain, Tottenham have seen a £44.8m bid to sign Frenkie de Jong rejected by Ajax.

The 21-year-old has made quite a name for himself in the Eredivisie with a host of Europe’s top clubs believed to be tracking him.

However, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claims Spurs have seen their offer for the player rejected, and it seems certain he will instead move to Barcelona next summer, with the young star eager expressing his wish to further his career by featuring in the Champions League for the Dutch side this season.

And it seems Tottenham are already planning to look elsewhere, with reports in the Italian media claiming the club faces a straight battle with Roma to sign Hector Herrera in January.

The Mexican midfielder is likely to be available for around just €15m in January, with his contract due to expire next summer at the Portuguese club next summer.

Il Corriere dello Sport claims Roma look favourites to land Herrera with the club’s director of football Monchi said to have already held talks over the deal, but it’s claimed a move to the Premier League with Spurs cannot be discounted either.
