Jadon Sancho would be the ideal signing for Liverpool this summer, according to former Reds forward Fabio Borini.
It will be an interesting summer at Liverpool after they failed to retain their Premier League title. Speculation has been rife about how their attack might change for next season. Only Mohamed Salah has lived up to his usual standards out of their usual front three, but he has been linked with an exit.
Diogo Jota has shown the benefits of bringing in extra attackers, with the former Wolves star putting pressure on the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
After seeing the impact Jota has made, Liverpool may choose to sign another attacker in the summer. Especially if one of their current options leaves, they will need reinforcements up front.
One player they could pursue is Sancho – or at least that’s whom Borini wants them to go after.
Sancho has excelled since leaving Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund as a youngster. Now a fully-fledged England international, the winger was a top target for Manchester United last summer.
United failed to tempt Dortmund into reducing their £108m asking price for Sancho. Ultimately, the 21-year-old stayed put in Germany.
But they may have to sell him this year if they miss out on Champions League qualification. United could revive their interest after only signing young alternatives instead of Sancho in recent months.
However, Borini – who scored three goals in 38 appearances for Liverpool – wants to see his former side sign Sancho.
“Looking at Liverpool’s competitors I think more depth in the attacking positions would do the team good,” he told CaughtOffside.
“Jadon Sancho would be a great signing and it would be fun to steal him from Man Utd.”
It has been a disappointing season for last season’s champions. A number of injuries have not helped but they would still have been aiming higher.
Borini thinks they will use the summer to reset and has advised them to improve their squad depth.
“They need to rest mentally and physically,” he added.
“They’ve been pushing at their best for more than three years and the injuries this season, unfortunately, showed that the length of the squad isn’t enough for the many games. They have to play in so many competitions every year.”
Liverpool hunt goal machine
Wednesday’s European papers suggested Liverpool may actually be looking at a different attacker.
Patson Daka is the man in question thanks to his fine form in front of goal for RB Salzburg. He scored against Liverpool in pre-season and has gone on to get more goals than the number of games he has played in the Austrian Bundesliga this term.
Compared to Sadio Mane, who also used to play for Salzburg, Daka is rated in the €25m bracket.
And according to Don Balon, the Zambia international is an option for Liverpool’s attack.
