Striker plan dashed, as Man Utd have ‘best option’ in mind for Cavani, new signing

Manchester United reportedly believe that pairing Edinson Cavani with a new winger such as Jadon Sancho is their ‘best option’ this summer.

United have several areas that they are looking to address ahead of the upcoming transfer window. A new goalkeeper could be on the cards, with David de Gea’s future uncertain. Furthermore, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer supposedly wants to bring in a new centre-back to be Harry Maguire’s long-term defensive ally.

Up front, debate has ensued over which area the Red Devils should target.

Reports claim that they want a new striker, with Erling Haaland and Dominic Calvert-Lewin targets.

However, with Edinson Cavani impressing this season, talk has not gone away of a new winger arriving at Old Trafford instead.

Indeed, the Red Devils chased Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho last summer, but eventually backed down over his £108million asking price.

Nevertheless, 90min claims that United see a new winger signing paired with Cavani as their ‘best option’.

Sancho also remains their top target and he could be available for potentially even half of last summer’s fee; he has eaten into another year of his contract but, more crucially, Dortmund are fighting a losing battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Manchester United can't spend big this summer

Manchester United can't spend big this summer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits the club is unlikely to spend big in the upcoming summer transfer window due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the report adds that United cannot simply focus on bringing in Sancho, due to the uncertainty over Cavani’s future.

His father claimed earlier this year that the 34-year-old wants to leave this summer for Boca Juniors.

Ex-United defender Marcos Rojo – who plays for Boca – has also claimed that the Uruguayan has spoken to the club’s president about a transfer.

As such, United will have to work simultaneously on two fronts if their ‘best option’ is to come to fruition.

90min adds that Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze is another winger on a list of options that the Old Trafford club continue to ‘make checks’ on.

Man Utd make Juventus winger checks

Paulo Dybala, Dejan Kulusevski

Meanwhile, reports claim that Juventus winger Dejan Kulusevski is another player who United are keen on.

Kulusevski was a target for United when he burst onto the scene with Parma after graduating Atalanta’s academy.

The 21-year-old has provided four goals and one assists in Serie A for Juventus this season. Only 16 of his 30 league appearances have been starts, though.
