Wigan have re-signed Sunderland’s Jordi Gomez on a one-year deal after the midfielder completed a medical at the DW Stadium.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, who began his career with the Barcelona youth team, spent the second half of last season on loan at Blackburn where he scored three goals in 19 appearances.

Gomez enjoyed four seasons in the Premier League with the Latics before they were relegated in 2012-13 and he rejoins the Championship club following their promotion from League One last term.

Former team-mate and Wigan manager Gary Caldwell was delighted to get his man as he told the club’s official website: “There have been rumours about this one all summer and we have had to work really hard to get him here within our budget.

“Football-wise, we all know what Jordi can do, and at 31 he is still at the peak of his abilities. His quality on the ball is second to none and he will be able to pass on his knowledge and experience on and off the fields to help the younger members of the squad. He adds great competition to the squad and we are delighted to have got him.”

Gomez scored 28 goals in 162 appearances for Wigan last time around helping them to FA Cup glory in 2013 as well as being involved in the Europa League and he joins the rest of his team-mates in training ahead of Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

Wigan tweeted: “@JordiGomez14 will of course take up the number 14 for his return to the club!”
