When he was sold everyone on the planet knew he would be irreplacable. Barcelona wanted our player if they couldn’t get Aguero. You can’t tempt City with riches so their primary candidate was always going to be Suarez. He bit a player in the world cup, LFC were terrified about what he would do next, so the reluctant sale was on. The next part is really where the businessman earn their sheckels. We were in the boss seat but came away with a fee less than Spurs got for selling Bale. We needed an immediate replacement but could not get either Alexis Sanchez or Christian Tello as a makeweight in the deal. Instead we took the cash & bought Balotelli hoping to turn him into a worldie. We could & should have said Luis we can’t get a replacement in this deal. Sit out your punishment because were buying Balotelli to replace you until you can play again. That decision would have taken balls along the line of Ferguson refusing to get shot of Cantona after that Kung Fu kick. Selling Suarez without an immediate replacement as part of the deal was the biggest mistake we have made since Moores decided to sell up to Hicks & Gillette. YNWA

Sanj, just makes you think about all the politics that otherwise get in the way of something good. Obviously Barca were sniffing around and in fairness, the transfer was bound to happen (and it did).

I think the reaction on Suarez after the Palace game said it all because he really did give his all in a Red shirt and had we won the league, then things might have turned out differently.

All hindsight naturally, but the owners surely must learn from this and accept that to compete with the best, you have to have the best.

    Cheers

Did we sell him to Arsenal? He wanted to go there too. We should have used our boss seat to least bag Tello as a makeweight or at a push Sanchez depending upon how badly Barcelona wanted Suarez. I believe hard bargaining would have worked as we have experienced ourselves over Konoplyanka & Texeira. Players wanted to come to us, but their clubs had the final say. We really couldn’t afford to give away a player like that & looking at events since we gave him away at 75 million.

Sanj,Barcelona definitely got him on the cheap, and I think they knew that at the time. He’s the best player in the world in my opinion, forget Ronaldo and Messi

ST, Barcelona have had a bid of 145 million from Utd. for Neymar & they will probably turn it down. Neymar is not twice the player Suarez is, he is just younger. LFC are crap at negotiating in the transfer market & hiking ticket prices after another less than impressive window followed by the Leicester result rubs too many noses in FSG’s deficiencies. I think we deserve better than this & I’m pleased we’ve found a voice again to say it.

Nine, bit of a rude response; don’t appreciate that!

Do you factually know Luis Suarez wanted to leave Liverpool?

And all the unnecessary flak with Evra?

Mate, there are sometimes underlying reasons that aren’t clear-cut as to why people leave their jobs; not just talking football too mate.

Sanj, my feeling is that LS was perfectly happy where he was; but in fairness, it’s accepted the thought of ‘money talks’ can ultimately rule an individual’s mind.

Think back to the old Teamtalk message boards mate and a lot of jealous people.

For me, that moment at Selhurst Park 2014 said it all.

    Cheers

Luis Suarez wanted to leave 12 months earlier but was persuaded to stay on the understanding he could leave the following summer. We have to remember that Mrs Suarez had her parents based in Barcelona. You cannot blame the owners for A.Suarez wanting to leave and B.Sanchez not wanting to come!

Evra ruined it, not to mention his silly ‘shake hand’ tactics.

Spot on Nil. I think we are taking things laying down Spodge if we think that just because Suarez wanted out we had to sell him on Barcelona’s terms. The fact is, as two Russian clubs have firmly shown us, clubs don’t have to sell regardless of where players want to play. We have rarely been in such a powerful negotiating position with a La Liga club as when Barcelona came in for Suarez. A decent poker player would have held out for what we want & come away with at least one of Tello or Sanchez + 40 million, or even both + 10 million. The club was just keen to get shot of him & snatched at the 75 million in the hope of rebuilding with three or four average players on lower wages with premier league experience & an Italian striker willing to take a wage cut to join, but who was a huge gamble for any club. Our transfer strategy, a device created by FSG has us going from a title challengers to a mid-table languisher. Klopp’s appointment so far has been a placebo because when push came to shove & striking reinforcement to get top 4 was needed in this window. They were only willing to pursue targets they had no chance of getting for the amounts they were submitting or the time left in the window to bring them. There is a saying “you can fool all the people once, but you cant fool all the people all the time.” When I say people I mean customers, no supporters, no I won’t say suckers. This club, these supporters deserve better than a slicker version of Hicks & Gillette that considers itself the bank that says yes rather than RBS & Loic Remy’s ticker still seems to be fine over at Chelsea. Sanj are you sure we were in such a strong bargaining position over the sale of Suarez? How many months did they have to wait before his suspension was over? How could they be sure he would not do something else daft? They knew how good a footballer he was but there was an element of risk.

Suarez also got sold under another tv-deal, he would be more expensive right now, top the 100 million barrier.

The most important thing regarding his transfer was his wife, she & her family are from Barcelona & I am sure she wanted to live there.

Spodge, they used exactly that to get their man on their terms. Suarez signed a good behaviour clause etc but was he going to blow it at what was his ultimate destination since a boy? I would argue that we needed the player far more than the 75 million we got for him, even if he sat out half a season stewing & itching to play. His value the following summer would have held, we would only have needed to bring in cover until his ban was over. Even if Barcelona walked away they would have got frustrated at not being able to land Aguero & come back with the player + cash deal, which would have been fantastic for us. Even if they didn’t, we could have coped with his ban & finished the season strongly with his return effectively playing for his summer move. We held the cards & we needed to be better in negotiations to get what we needed which wasn’t a straight cash deal at less than his true value.

Liverlad, the point is his Mrs. would have got to Barcelona eventually & the team would have let him go knowing we had adequately replaced him with a player coming from them + cash. That had to be the ideal solution Brendan would have wanted. It would take Cahunas to have dug our heels in to get what we want but that is exactly what we should have done. We are a soft touch in the market.

Nil, Luis Suarez tried to force his way out the previous season to Arsenal mate and given that Suarez is on record as stating that it was “my dream to play for Barca” I think we can take it that he wanted to join Barcelona when he did. Cheers 999

sanji, Sanchez didn’t want to go to Liverpool though mate he wanted to go to Arsenal you can’t make a player join a club he doesn’t want to join.

Had Sanchez not wanted to join Arsenal and had been happy to sign for Liverpool I am sure he would have been part of the Suarez deal.

In respect of the valuation I don’t remember to many Liverpool fans complaining about the £75m at the time and Suarez did come with an awful lot of baggage too.

nine, we complained at the time because we got less than Bale for the Suarez sale, we complained because we did not get Sanchez as part of the deal. What was the reason we didn’t get Tello, if Sanchez was impossible because he was desperate for Arsenal? Brendan tracked Tello for years & Barce repeatedly send him on loan rather than play him. There is no reason he would have said no because we could offer CL football. The only reason for not getting Sanchez & Tello was wages. Arsenal probably offered more. It is record that Delle Alli only turned LFC down because they were only offering him 4k a week. We are on the verge of losing Jerome Sinclair because of wages & the club is determined to get a fee if he goes. This is about money ahead of bagging the players we need & it is keeping us midtable.
