Man Utd plan sees midfielder make major U-turn on future

Tahith Chong Jesse Lingard TEAMtalk

Tahith Chong now seems all set to sign a new contract with Manchester United, according to the player’s agent.

The 20-year-old will be a free agent in June and midfielder looked all set to leave Old Trafford in pursuit of regular game time.

His agent Erkan Alkan claimed that Chong planned to part company with United in the January transfer window.

“He has different views on Tahith than the leadership,” Alkan told Voetbal International.

“A coach thinks about himself, I think about my player. He has come to a point where he feels that he is not going any further. Then it’s time to look further.”

A move though never materialised even though Inter Milan had held talks with Chong’s representatives

According to FCInterNews.it, negotiations with the Nerazzurri were progressing well, with the salary offered coming to €1.5m per season initially, with the player chasing €2m plus bonuses.

Now though there has been an apparent major U-turn with Dutch outlet AD via Sport Witness carrying quotes from his agent saying there have been developments and Chong “will soon sign a new contract” at United.

Alkan said: “There was a lot of interest, we talked to big clubs, but Manchester United came up with a good plan for Tahith. He likes to stay with the club that brought him from the Netherlands.”

There appears to have been a softening from either one or both parties regarding Chong’s contract renewal and after negotiations and agreement has been made.

Chong, 20, has made eight starts in the cups for United this season, but for of those have been in the EFL Trophy side, while he has appeared for just 34 minutes in the Premier League this term.
