Talks over Man Utd full-back transfer begin as Jorge Mendes gets involved

Manchester United can expect talks over the summer sale of Diogo Dalot to intensify in the coming days after the intervention of super-agent Jorge Mendes.

The 21-year-old joined the Red Devils during Jose Mourinho’s reign back in 2018.

Despite being lauded upon his arrival, Dalot struggled to adjust to English football and failed to convince Mourinho’s successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he was worthy of a regular place in his starting line-up.

The full-back was subsequently shipped off to AC Milan on a season-long loan last summer.

And while Dalot has only handed fleeting chances with the Serie A title contenders, it seems he has done enough to earn a longer stay.

As such, Il Milanista reports that Milan chiefs Frederic Massara and Paolo Maldini are ready to open talks with United over a permanent deal for the Portuguese star in the coming days.

The article claims Milan are ‘very fond’ of Dalot and are ready to meet United’s €17m asking price for the full-back.

However, Milan’s chances of signing Dalot may not be as cut and dried as made out.

As per Calciomercato, Sevilla are also emerging as contenders to sign Dalot.

Furthermore, Don Balon claim a third club could enter the running to further muddy the waters. That’s after Mendes offered his client to Barcelona, knowing the LaLiga giants are in need of right-sided defensive reinforcements.

Having sold Nelson Semedo to Wolves over the summer, Barca only have Sergino Dest as an option. That’s seemingly with Sergi Roberto no longer in their long-term plans.

Tactical switch for McTominay

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he may have to allow Scott McTominay to get forward more to “unleash” his shooting abilities.

The defensive midfielder netted a smart finish to send the Red Devils past West Ham in Tuesday’s FA Cup tie.

However, he has shown a penchant for goalscoring – including from long-range – this season. His archive also includes well taken goals against Southampton and Everton.

Therefore, while remaining a key defensive worker lower down the pitch, he has shown willingness to spring forward with effect.

Solskjaer is well aware of McTominay’s abilities up front and said that his side must “learn from” the Scotland international.

“Scott’s a clinical striker of the ball. He used to play as a striker, we know that, and he finishes with authority,” the manager told MUTV.

“Like, ‘bang’, finish. No messing about. No safety. That’s something we’ve got to learn from.

“For a defensive midfielder, we’ll have to unleash him and release him forward because he’s a goal threat in the box and he’s got a good strike on him.”
