Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga has said that seeing the smile on his father’s face is his best moment from a memorable week in which he made his Premier League debut and impressed in the FA Cup.

Tanganga, 20, made his Spurs debut in the Carabao Cup defeat to Colchester in September and was unused until Jose Mourinho handed him his Premier League debut in the clash against Liverpool last Saturday.

The England Under-20 international followed that up with his FA Cup debut on Tuesday as Spurs beat Middlesbrough in their third-round replay, with Tanganga turning in a man-of-the-match performance.

“My mum’s not here right now, she’s on holiday, but my dad was there and he was really pleased,” he said. “I was really happy to just see the joy on his face.

“He’s worked so hard for years, you know, taking me to football, sacrificing time off work to take me to games, standing there in the cold watching me when it’s raining.

“He’s just been there. I was so happy to just see the joy on his face. I’m so grateful for all that he’s given me. I was so happy.”

Tanganga signed a one-year contract last summer, but it is understood that there is an option for the club to extend.

That will be a formality and Tanganga, who joined the club as a 10-year-old, wants to stay for his entire career.

“I’ve been at Tottenham for a long time, since I was 10 and they’ve helped me a lot,” he added. “He’s just been there. I was so happy to just see the joy on his face. I’m so grateful for all that he’s given me. I was so happy.

“This club is fantastic, the staff, the coaches, everyone has just helped me. The club means a lot to me, having been with them for so long.

“Of course I’d love to stay with them as long as I could and go on until I retire. But that’s for the club to deal with me and for me to focus on the pitch and deliver as much as I possibly can.”

Spurs’ next game sees them face Watford in Premier League action on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Tottenham have announced the signing of Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes on an initial 18-month loan deal.

Fernandes had been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United but Mourinho’s side have beaten such sides to the 22-year-old’s signature.

The deal reportedly comes with a £42.76m option to make the move permanent.

Speaking to Spurs’ official website, Fernandes said it has been a “dream” to join Tottenham.
