Defender notes key United trait meaning they will ‘definitely win trophies’

Defender Alex Telles insists he can sense a winning mentality in the Manchester United dressing room which is sure to lead to silverware.

Telles, 28, arrived at Old Trafford in October last year after four successful seasons with Porto. He made 195 appearances for the Portuguese giants, scoring 26 goals.

The left-back won two Primeira Liga titles and the Portuguese Cup while being capped four times by Brazil. But he has had to bide his time with United and has made just six Premier League starts among seven outings.

The former Galatasaray ace has seen much more action in Europe. He has enjoyed seven outings spread across the Champions League and Europa League.

He would love to see more action in the league but had nothing but praise for those around him in the squad.

“Having been here at United for six months now, I’ve seen enough to say that I think we’re on the right path to success,” he told the club’s official website.

“Quality-wise, all the players are high quality. Whoever comes into the side maintains high standards. Whoever comes in to replace another player or whoever is playing, the high standard is maintained which is really important.”

Collective will to win tangible for Telles

United have enjoyed a decent season domestically and sit second in the top-flight table. A title challenge may be beyond them, with Manchester City seemingly destined to lift the trophy in May.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: League position defines progress - not trophies

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says league position defines progress rather than whether trophies are won.

They are also alive in the FA Cup and face fellow top-four side Leicester City in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

The Champions League was a disaster, with Solskjaer’s men crashing out of the group stage. They are through to the last-eight of the Europa League, however, and face Italian side Granada over two legs.

Therefore there is much to play for before the dust settles on 2020-2021. It remains to be seen if United can snare any silverware this term. But if they don’t, Telles has made it clear it will not be for the want of trying.

“I believe we have a really good group, and you get a feel of this competitiveness as when we lose or draw everyone’s really upset in the dressing room, it’s noticeable amongst the players,” he added.

“I’m not the only bad loser here. I think this frustration when we don’t win a game is a sign that we are on the right path as there are only winning players here, I’m sure we will definitely win trophies here.”
