The eight Liverpool players hoping to catch Klopp’s eye on loan in 2020-21

While Liverpool possess one of the strongest squads in the world, they also have a number of exciting prospects that will be hoping to catch Jurgen Klopp’s eye while out on loan in 2020-21.

Klopp has put his faith in youth during his five years at Anfield, helping to develop the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones.

We’ve taken a look at the eight players sent out on loan who have the chance to prove they’re worthy of a first-team place next term.

Sheyi Ojo

Ojo became the most expensive 14-year-old in history when he joined Liverpool from MK Dons for £2million in 2011.

But the 23-year-old has made just 13 first-team appearances for the club and is spending the 2020-21 season at Championship side Cardiff City, his sixth temporary move away from Anfield.

He started their first five Championship games of the season and scored the winning goal against Preston in October.

Harry Wilson

After getting his first taste of Premier League football at Bournemouth in 2019-20, Wilson was the subject of a £12million bid from Burnley.

Liverpool rejected the offer and Cardiff fought off competition from Swansea to sign the Wales international on a season-long loan deal.

“Harry wants to play in the Premier League and he wants to play for Ryan Giggs every international break,” Cardiff manager Neil Harris said.

“I could not believe we had a chance of bringing him in if I am honest. That’s not putting pressure on him. I just think he’s a Premier League player and an international footballer.”

Loris Karius

Karius hasn’t played for Liverpool since *that* game against Real Madrid, spending the last two seasons on loan at Turkish club Besiktas.

After failing to secure a permanent move away from Anfield, the goalkeeper has been allowed to join cult Bundesliga side Union Berlin on loan.

Taiwo Awoniyi

Despite joining Liverpool in 2015, Awoniyi has never played for the Reds due to his inability to secure a UK work permit.

After loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, Mouscron and Mainz, the striker will spend the 2020-21 season at Union Berlin alongside Karius.

“It would definitely be great to be a part of the success (at Liverpool) but honestly, I would rather be where I am playing more and in a team that I can earn the medal of my own that I honestly worked for,” Awoniyi told BBC Sport in August 2020.

“It sounds a bit odd but that is the truth. To be compensated for not making any contribution is not fair.”

Kamil Grabara

Signed by Liverpool in 2016, Grabara continues to await his first senior appearance for the Reds.

Having spent part of the 2018-19 season on loan at AGF, the goalkeeper has returned to the Danish Superliga club for a second spell.

Marko Grujic

Klopp’s very first signing, Grujic has only appeared 16 times for Liverpool’s first team, scoring his first goal for the club in a 7-2 win over Lincoln in September 2020.

The midfielder fell further down the pecking order following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara and his velvet first touch and decided to join Portuguese outfit Porto in search of regular first-team football.

Ben Woodburn

It is now four years since Woodburn became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer, but you could be forgiven for thinking it was a lot longer.

Loan moves have failed to help Woodburn kick on and realise his potential to date, with a switch to Sheffield United cut short in 2018-19 and last season’s spell at Oxford United decimated by injury.

The 21-year-old has returned to League One to join Blackpool until January, where he will at least be greeted by a familiar face in former Liverpool Under-23s boss Neil Critchley, who is now manager at Bloomfield Road.

Harvey Elliott

The youngest player to ever appear in the Premier League, Elliott looked every bit worthy of the hype in his cameos for Liverpool last season, having rejected interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona to move to Anfield from Fulham.

Still just 17, Elliott has joined Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers on loan for the season, where he will play alongside another former Liverpool academy player in Daniel Ayala.
