Thiago to ‘set course’ for Liverpool with deal done, says trusted source

Thiago Alcantara Bayern Munich

Thiago Alcantara will seal a move to Liverpool after winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich, according to a report.

Thiago played a key role in Kingsley Coman’s winning goal as Bayern edged past Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday. The triumph is Bayern’s sixth European Cup, with Thiago picking up his second winners’ medal.

However, speculation over several weeks has said that that could be the midfielder’s last game for the German champions. He has refused a new contract in Bavaria, with less than a year left on his current terms.

What’s more, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he would work with a “fair offer” for the Spaniard.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Thiago will now “abandon” Bayern and “set course” for Liverpool.

There is a mutual affection between the player and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. Klopp pitched his Liverpool side against Thiago in last season’s Champions League, also watching him in action while managing Borussia Dortmund.

Further reports, however, suggest Liverpool are unwilling to pay Bayern’s asking price for the midfielder.

The Bundesliga giants reportedly want around £27million but Liverpool could allegedly wait until January, when they can reach a pre-contract agreement with Thiago.

Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann believes a deal to take Thiago to Anfield will likely go through.

He told talkSPORT: “It looks like he has been offered a contract in Munich that he turned down.

“He must have shown an interest of staying otherwise they wouldn’t have offered him a new contract, but at the last minute he turned round and said he might want to do something else.

“I’d be very surprised if he turned down a contract with Bayern Munich if he hasn’t got anything else. I’m sure he has got an offer from Liverpool, it’s probably about the transfer fee now.

“I never felt he was a defensive or a holding midfielder, but he has been absolutely magnificent. The way he pulled things together [against PSG], and he’s a brilliant footballer.

“He can give a new and different dimension to Liverpool’s midfield. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up at Liverpool.”
