Thiago throws Liverpool transfer into doubt with surprise revelation

Thiago Alcantara

Thiago Alcantara has thrown his chances of a move to the Premier League in doubt by admitting he has never said he is leaving Bayern Munich.

Spanish midfielder Thiago was one of the key players in Bayern’s victorious Champions League campaign. However, with just one year left on his contract, the club aren’t optimistic about keeping him.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Thiago, especially if Georginio Wijnaldum moves to Barcelona.

Some reports suggest that Manchester United want to hijack Liverpool’s move. However, the 29-year-old apparently prefers a switch to Anfield for two reasons.

Just how much he wants either move has been put into question via his latest comments, though.

Speaking while on international duty with Spain, Thiago said: “I have not said at any time that I am leaving. Every year you put me in a different team.

“I am on the sidelines, my future is tomorrow’s game right now. I neither care nor am I interested in what I know I talked.”

Bayern Munich had previously admitted they expected Thiago to leave during this transfer window. However, they would only sell him if a club paid his €30m release clause.

This isn’t the first time Thiago has hinted at a Bayern stay during this international break. He said after Spain’s draw with Germany on Thursday that Bayern is his “home”.

Thiago responds to Barcelona praise

Another option for Thiago could be to return to Barcelona, who are undergoing a rebuild. And Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen recently said he would like the club to sign Thiago.

The midfielder welcomed that praise, but insists comments from other players do not mean he will be moving.

“It is an honour that Marc says my name, because he is an incredible goalkeeper,” Thiago said. “But he is not the technical director of any team and there is no need to give an answer.

“I always want to have the best, I wish I could always be. It’s a joy that you say my name obviously.”
