Liverpool warned they face Werner repeat, as inside track on Thiago revealed

Thiago Alcantara TEAMtalk

Liverpool have been warned they face another Timo Werner situation after Manchester United entered the market for Thiago.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was keen on a move for Werner, but the champions had to withdraw their interest in the striker at Easter when they realised his price tag was around £53m.

The RB Leipzig attacker eventually signed for Chelsea, leaving Liverpool to look elsewhere to deepen their squad.

And the champions have been warned that a similar scenario is on the horizon regarding Thiago.

The Bayern Munich ace wants to leave the Bundesliga champions this summer, with claims he is keen on playing for Klopp at Anfield.

Klopp has cooled the talk and publicly Liverpool have been eager to distance themselves from the transfer speculation.

Over the weekend The Sun claimed Manchester United are also keen on Thiago.

The Red Devils tried to land the Spain star under Louis van Gaal’s regime, but they are now back in for the player, despite closing in on a deal for Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek is set to sign for United imminently after missing international training on Monday to have a United medical.

United though could “pair him up with Thiago”, according to the Daily Express after Liverpool hit a roadblock in their bid to sign the Bayern star.

Transfer expert Jan Aage-Fjortoft says Liverpool need to sell before they can buy, and that United’s interest is genuine.

Fjortoft told ESPN: “Thiago surprisingly wanted to leave Bayern. Bayern thought they had him, there was a three-year deal, then Thiago wanted four, then Bayern said four and he said he needed to talk to his wife.

“He wants to play in the Premier League, and it’s important that he wants to play in the Premier League.

“He’s never said that he wants to play for this club or that club.

“The rumour was that Liverpool have got to sell before they can buy, and I think that’s one of the reasons why this is slowing down.

“Manchester United are very keen on Thiago, that is 100 per cent true.

“They’re in the market for Thiago, and if you saw this week there was an interview with [the Bayern CEO], and he said I expect a bid to be in this week.

“I think there will be some movement, and I’m not 100 per cent sure which club will make the first bid. I think this is open.

“Everyone thought it would be Liverpool because Klopp loved him, well Klopp loved Timo Werner as well, and he’ll play in blue next season.”
