Granovskaia hails ‘world-class’ Thiago Silva after new Chelsea deal agreed

Chelsea have activated their option to extend the contract of Thiago Silva by a further year following his debut season with the club.

Silva joined Chelsea as a free agent last summer after being released by Paris Saint-Germain. His experience proved important as he made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge. Even though he is in his mid-thirties, he is still at the top of his game. As a result, Chelsea will continue with him next season.

When he signed up with the club originally, his contract only lasted for one year. However, there was the option of an additional season and Chelsea have now exercised it.

Silva will thus get to add to his 34 appearances for the Blues after helping them win the Champions League. He may have gone off with injury in the final, but was an important presence along the journey.

The centre-back, who will turn 37 in September, is showing no signs of slowing down. Hence, Chelsea expect another big season from him in 2021-22.

Gary Neville says Thiago Silva has shown he is world class and that he is capable of leading Chelsea into the top four after he scored and helped the Blues to a clean sheet against West Ham on Monday.

Director Marina Granovskaia told the club website: “When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad.

“Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.

“We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend.

“We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.”

Silva to continue under Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel, Thiago SIlva, Chelsea contract extension

Silva’s contract extension comes on the same day that head coach Thomas Tuchel also agreed to a longer stay at the club.

Tuchel has made a positive impression since taking over from Frank Lampard in January. His first half-a-season in charge culminated with winning the Champions League after beating Manchester City in the final. Now, he has been rewarded with a contract extension.

His initial deal only lasted for 18 months. But he has now been given more security with a two-year extension to those terms.

Tuchel told Chelsea’s official website: “I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal.

“I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family.

“There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation.”
