Thierry Henry likens Man Utd, Chelsea target to Ruud van Nistelrooy

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has compared a Manchester United and Chelsea striker target to former Red Devils frontman Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Borussia Dortmund attacker Erling Haaland has rapidly become one of the most sought-after forwards in world football.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed an incredible 15-month spell in Germany, notching 47 goals in just 48 games.

Having failed to snap the Norwegian when he moved to Dortmund in 2019, the MEN claims that United have now made Haaland their top target this summer.

The report adds that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and new football director John Murtough have mutually agreed that Haaland is the perfect long-term replacement for Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are said to have their own plan in place to sign the former RB Salzburg man.

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to Liverpool’s trip to Wolves, Henry said that sees similarities in Haaland’s selfish streak in front of goal – similar to that of Van Nistelrooy.

“He doesn’t care about anything else other than the goal. He doesn’t care, other players will go onto the wing, he wants to stay in the frame of the net, in between the two posts, he knows he’s lethal there,” Henry said.

“He’s so powerful, by the way, if you look at him, you think: ‘Oh, trouble’. The way he finishes is just ridiculous. He believes so much in himself – I like that – there’s a bit of cockiness about him. You’ve got to be a bit cocky, you’ve got to look and people and think you can score.

“Yes (similar to van Nistelrooy), him, the likes of – not so much in our day – Pele, but the desire that they have. They want to kill, they want to be in the box, they’re looking at the defender and thinking: ‘You’re not going to be able to live with me’.

“You can see sometimes when the midfielder doesn’t give him the ball, that look you sometimes give your midfielder, like: ‘Eh, are you going to give me the ball? I want to score now, I want to be the guy who’s going to make the team win’. I can see that with him.”

Haaland the man to replace Cavani

Manchester United have been told they signed Edinson Cavani at the ‘wrong time’ and that they now need a younger version of the Uruguay striker.

Cavani is out of contract at the end of the season, with strong speculation that he is looking to sign for Boca Juniors.

The 34-year-old has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe in recent years. However, age is now catching up with him, as he eyes a final pay day back in South America.

United’s first ever football director John Murtough is expected to have a big job on his hands, starting this summer.

And former England boss Glenn Hoddle says signing a new No.9 should be United’s priority.

Prolific Borussia Dortmund frontman Erling Haaland would be his top choice. But if the Norwegian is priced out a switch than a ‘younger’ version of Cavani would be the best move.

Hoddle told Premier League Productions: “Yeah [a striker] would be [priority], yeah. I think it’s got to be. You need a young Cavani.

“You’ve got Cavani at the wrong time. Five or six years ago, his movement, his hold-up play, everything he had and he’s got still.

“When he plays for United I see a different United team, even now at his age. And he’s not that old, what is he, 33?

“So Haaland would be the one but how are you going to get him? Have the days gone where if United were in for you, ‘oh I’m going to Man United’? It was Real Madrid or Man United.

“Those days unfortunately for United have gone, they’ve got to build that up again.

“But Haaland would be on everyone’s lips, everyone would want him.”
