Reports from Madrid suggest winger James Rodriguez is becoming unhappy with life at Everton and wants a summer move back to Spain.
But, after failing to make the expected impact, he spent two seasons on loan with Bayern Munich. Again, he was not a standout player for the Bavarians in either 2017-18 or 2018-19.
That meant the Bundesliga giants did not take up the option to buy him outright and he returned to the Bernabeu. The South American was very much on the peripheries at Real last term.
He made just five starts among eight La Liga appearances as Zinedine Zidane’s men won the title. The Merseysiders stepped in, signing James on a two-year deal, with an option for a third season.
The move reunited him with former Real boss Carlo Ancelotti and he has made steady progress at Goodison Park. The former Porto winger has scored five Premier League goals from 16 outings to help Everton to seventh place.
But, if reports are to be believed, he has already had enough. Real Madrid focused website Defensa Central (via Sport Witness) are suggesting he is finding it hard to adjust to English life.
Their ‘exclusive’ report claims he is uncomfortable with the ‘weather, customs, very physical football’.
The information is said to come from a source close to the Spanish club. There are few details given and no direct quotes to back the story up.
James has eyes on Real rival
It is also claimed that James wants a return to the Spanish capital to join Atletico Madrid. It would certainly be a good move for the player, with Los Rojiblancos riding high at the top of the La Liga table.
They are strong favourites to win a first title since 2013-2014. Diego Simeone will look to build on that success in the summer.
But it is open to debate whether he will be keen to sign a player who failed at Real. It remains to be seen how much truth there is in the report, with James yet to have his say on the issue.
His next task will be to take on table-topping Manchester City on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola brings his record-breaking side to Goodison Park looking to make it 17 straight wins in all competitions.
James is available for the home side after overcoming a slight knock.
