Youri Tielemans has claimed he has no reason to leave Leicester City and believes the club are set up to win silverware.
The Belgium midfielder has impressed again this season and started 24 of Leicester’s 25 Premier League games.
Tielemans, 23, has been a reliable component of Brendan Rodgers’ side who have climbed to third spot in the table.
The midfielder though has been getting admiring glances from Europe and at home.
Smeets made it clear that Tielemans, who was a£35m signing from Monaco in 2019, is hungry to win trophies.
Asked if he can achieve his ambitions with Leicester, Tielemans replied: “Yes, why not? This is a club where you have the best environment you can have, especially with this new training ground. The people around you just want the best for you.
“It’s brilliant to be here. I really like it here. We’ll see what’s coming in the future.
“But I think the environment is just perfect to win trophies here. You can’t predict the future but I think everything around the club and inside the club is made for it.”
Manchester United were linked with the former Anderlecht man in July 2019, while L’Equipe said Liverpool were also understood to be keen.
Leicester had made an offer for the player, but Tielemans’ agent was keen to wait in case bigger clubs came in with concrete offers.
The player though was not happy waiting around and instead committed to a four-year deal in the midlands.
That deal expires in 2023 and Leicester are in talks over an extension, worth around £100,000, according to the Leicester Mercury.
Brendan Rodgers confirmed earlier this month that he was hoping to offer Tielemans a new contract.
Rodgers: His game management is so good
“I’d be very keen, we would obviously love to extend his time here,” said Rodgers.
“He’s been able to come in and over the last couple of seasons he’s shown the qualities and the improvements he’s been able to make. He’s a really, really important player.
“He’s a joy to work with, he has incredible maturity for a young guy, and you can see the consistency in his performances. He’s got a couple of years left (on his contract) in the summer, and I know it’s something the club will speak to him and his representatives about.
“With the ball, he has quality. His decision-making is so good, whether to play it first time, or whether to dribble with it into space. But also his communication, you have heard him talking throughout. His game management is so good.”
