Tim Sherwood: Joins League One outfit

Tim Sherwood reckons Manchester United need three signings to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made it 13 unbeaten in all competitions in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United. The Norwegian, however, wasn’t entirely happy after the game.

Sherwood admits Solskjaer is shaping a decent side at United. That said, he reckons they’re still a few signings away from competing with the likes of Liverpool and Man City.

Assessing where they need to strengthen, Sherwood picked out three areas of the side. He also named players from two former clubs as potential targets.

“I look at that squad now and I think they’re two or three players short of challenging for the title,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions.

“I think they need another striker, I think they need Jack Grealish, who is a brilliant player to have when teams sit back against them like Tottenham did the other evening. He can occupy the tight areas and create something.

“I think they need another centre-back as cover. If they can get that and buy them sort of players to attract them to the biggest club in the world then I think they’ll be real challengers. I think Ole’s done a brilliant building job.

“The back five picks itself, there’s a lot of good players in there. I think another centre-back would be useful to them and I think they’ll go out and get that.

“Midfield we have a lot of options if it’s not Scott McTominay it’s Matic, who has two Premier League winners’ medals to his name. He has experience of doing that.”

Having already suggested the signing of Grealish, Sherwood then suggested a ‘Harry Kane type’ should be targeted.

“We [United] have exciting players up front with a lot of pace we just need that stick-on No 9 Harry Kane type. I’m not trying to sell him don’t worry, Daniel [Levy]!

“But I believe that if they get that top player and I think they can because it’s Manchester United then I think they have a real chance.”

Souness critical of Martial despite hat-trick

Much of the talk on Wednesday evening was of Anthony Martial’s first United hat-trick.

Despite clearly enjoying his evening, his heroics did come with a warning from Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness.

Anthony Martial TEAMtalk

“The third one [goal] was class,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“But we know he’s class. He’s got everything to be a top player if he could just have the same enthusiasm as Rashford the way he (conducts himself).

“There’s no doubt Martial is a proper player but he seems to hide it, sometimes he doesn’t seem interested but he was tonight. Maybe the answer is for him to score early in every game he plays and stays interested.”

Solskjaer, meanwhile, has been instructed to sign an African midfielder, whom one old boy reckons could be United’s version of Fabinho.
