Sancho ignored as Sherwood advises Man Utd to make double signing

Tim Sherwood says Manchester United would “flourish” if they signed Jack Grealish and Gareth Bale in a double Old Trafford swoop.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho remains United’s top target, although that deal looks in jeopardy.

Dortmund are unwilling to lower their £108million asking price, a fee the Red Devils see as unrealistic. What’s more, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward firmly believes the England international is worth less.

As such, reports on Sunday indicated that United are preparing to move for Bale as an alternative. Real Madrid have frozen the Wales winger out and he is reportedly available on a £22million permanent deal.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is another firm United target. The 25-year-old carried his side as they narrowly avoided relegation last season.

Speaking to Sky Sports (via Pundit Arena), Sherwood said United should consider moves for both players.

“I would go for Jack Grealish. I think Jack can open the door, he’s another [Bruno] Fernandes. He gives them a different quality that I think they need,” the pundit said.

“And I would still go out and get Gareth Bale on a free transfer. For me, I just think Gareth Bale needs to come back to the Premier League.

“He needs to be in the Premier League again and start playing football.

“I think he’s got a lot to offer and if he goes to a huge club like Manchester United, I think he’ll flourish for a couple of seasons.”

SHERWOOD WOULDN’T GO FOR SANCHO

Jadon Sancho

Sherwood also said that he would not be considering a move for Sancho if he was at the Old Trafford helm.

The former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss referenced United’s current attackers as reason to avoid the winger.

He said: “I don’t think they need Jadon Sancho, I really don’t.

“Listen, if they’ve got the money to go out and get Jadon Sancho, you’d bring him in because you want as many good players as you can at your football club.

“But he’s similar to what they’ve got. They’ve got [Mason] Greenwood, [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford and [Daniel] James, who played so much more than we expected him to. He ended up, especially at the early part of last season, as their main player. He was excellent.

“So they’ve got pace. All of those players that I’ve mentioned, like Sancho, have got pace and they’re very threatening when teams play a high line against them.”
