Struggling Germany forward Timo Werner could sensationally quit his Chelsea career this summer, according to a report.

Football Insider exclusively report that the 25-year-old £45m summer recruit could potentially move on after just 12 months at Stamford Bridge.

Werner has failed to hit the ground running in west London and he has struggled to hit top form under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.

The outlet claim “Chelsea sources” do not expect Werner to see out his contract, or anywhere near it.

The forward penned a five-year deal in June 2020, but there is a “growing expectation” he could quit and return to Germany “in the next year or two”.

A transfer may even be in offing this summer, claim the source, after a turbulent time with the Blues.

Werner scored 34 goals in 45 games last season for RB Leipzig, including 28 in 34 Bundesliga games.

Overall, meanwhile, he netted 95 times in 159 outings for Leipzig after joining in the summer of 2016.

However, he has struggled to recreate that form in England, scoring only five goals in 27 Premier League games. Indeed, he went 14 games without a goal in the top flight between November and February.

Werner lambasted by Tuchel

Asked last week by BBC Sport how he has found his debut season at Chelsea, Werner said: “Very tough, I think when you don’t score as a striker it’s always tough.

“But it’s a period like 15 games in the Premier League, I don’t know exactly, I never had it in my career before.

“It was tough for me because I want to help the team, I want to score because that’s my nature, I’m a striker.”

Werner has been given plenty of game time under Tuchel. But only one goal and three assists have followed.

And the forward found himself at the sharp end of Tuchel’s tongue on Monday and not because of his profligacy. Instead it was the striker’s reluctance to move back to the right wing after drifting onto the left was the issue.

At 0-0 in the win over Everton, pitchside microphones picked up Tuchel saying: “Timo, how long are you staying on the left? You’re playing on the right! The last 15 mins you’ve only been on the left! Don’t you understand?”
