Tottenham star’s father reveals where he could move in future

The father of Toby Alderweireld has hinted that the defender could leave Tottenham when his contract expires in 2023.

Alderweireld* signed a new contract in December 2019 after months of speculation about his future. His previous deal was due to expire in 2020, but he is now committed to the club for three more seasons.

However, it appears that his long-term future beyond then – by which time he will be 34 – may be away from north London.

His father Viv has given an interview to Belgian source Gazet van Antwerpen ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Royal Antwerp in the Europa League. And Alderweireld senior says his son could end up playing in his native country in the future.

He said: “The house will be ready in the course of 2023, in line with his contract with Tottenham.

“We’ll see where Toby will play football, at Tottenham, Ajax, an Antwerp club or elsewhere. But the chance that he will play closer to home at the age of 34 is real.”

Alderweireld was born in Antwerp, but has never played professionally in his native country. Instead, he began his career in the Netherlands with Ajax.

Alderweireld relishing hometown clash

The defender is looking forward to visiting his place of birth for Tottenham’s next Europa League game, and has told Spurs TV that it will be a “special” feeling.

“It’s special because I’ve never played in my home city – not in an official game – so it’s going to be strange, but special,” he said.

“I’ve been lucky to live in big cities – at this moment I live in London, an unbelievable city, so I feel at home as well – but it’s my home town, it’s where I come from, it’s where I go when it’s a holiday or when I have a day off and can travel. I always go there to see my family, so it’s very special.”

Alderweireld has an important game to focus on as well, though – and knows all too well how much of a challenge Royal Antwerp could pose.

“They are in a good moment, they’re a physical team, they know how to get a result and it’s one of their games of the season,” he said. “It’s going to be a big game for us.

“We just need to keep this momentum going and win every game that comes our way. We don’t need to think ‘oh, maybe we do this’ – no – just try to win, give everything and we go from there.”
