On-loan Torreira burns Arsenal bridges with inflammatory comments

Lucas Torreira TEAMtalk

Lucas Torreira has revealed his dream was always “to reach Atletico Madrid” after the Arsenal midfielder recently signed on loan for the LaLiga side.

Atletico were heavily linked with the Uruguay midfielder, and they finally got the deal done on deadline day as Thomas Partey moved to Arsenal.

Both deals were independent with the 24-year-old signing on loan until the end of the season.

Atletico will pay a loan fee, and cover his wages for the season, and there is understood to be an option to make the deal permanent next summer for around €20m.

Although as Football.London note there is no obligation to buy, just an option.

And that may well present a problem for Torreira if his time does not go to plan at the Wanda Metroplitano. That would mean the Fray Bentos-born player returning to The Emirates. And his latest comments are unlikely to sit well with Mikel Arteta.

Spanish outlet Fichajes quote Torreira as saying: “My wish and my dream has always been to be able to reach Atletico Madrid.

“It’s a goal I’ve set myself since I came to Italy when I was 17. And I’m not saying it because I’m here now, but I’ve never been encouraged to say it before because you know that maybe at some point you can’t get to give that dream. But today, really, when I was 24, I can tell. I have achieved this goal.

“Last season at Arsenal, on a personal level, it has not been good for me at all.”

Arsenal are understood to have been keen on a permanent move, Torreira too, but Atletico were only happy to sanction a loan switch.

Torreira added: “It all depends on how I go during the season, which I hope is very good. And maybe in the future I can stay at the club. It’s my idea too, because that’s what I want and what I really crave.”

Ozil’s damning statement

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil says he feels “deeply disappointed” that Arsenal have not “reciprocated” his love and hard work for the club by offering him a place in their Premier League squad.

Ozil’s future has proved the subject of intense debate in recent seasons amid his lack of game time.

The 32-year-old struggled for minutes under previous boss Unai Emery but the situation has worsened under Mikel Arteta.

Indeed, after failing to earn a place in Arsenal’s latest Europa League squad, Arteta then took the decision to cut him from his Premier League ranks.

Taking to Twitter, Ozil released a long and damning statement about his deteriorating relationship with his club.

“I’m really deeply disappointed by the fact that I have not been registered for the Premier League season for the time being,” the midfielder wrote.

“Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated.

“I’ve always tried to remain positive from week to week that there’s maybe a chance to get back in the squad soon again. That’s why I kept silent so far.”
