Tottenham backed to complete risky Liverpool signing, as Klopp turns to ex-Man Utd star as immediate replacement

One observer believes a Liverpool star ‘might fancy’ a move to Tottenham where he’ll become a regular starter, and Jurgen Klopp is reportedly turning to an ex-Man Utd star to fill the void.

Going under the radar at Anfield this summer is the impending upheaval between the sticks. Alisson Becker remains imperious, though both Liverpool’s second and third-choice stoppers could depart.

Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher is Alisson’s primary back-up and has always produced strong showings in his limited appearances.

Aged 24, the time is fast approaching for Kelleher to spread his wings and become a regular starter elsewhere.

The Sun reported Kelleher is on board with leaving the Reds this summer. Per the Sun and the Irish Independent, the keeper counts Brentford and Tottenham among his admirers.

Both clubs are poised to sever ties with their respective No 1s – David Raya and Hugo Lloris – at season’s end.

Raya has actually emerged as a credible contender to replace Lloris in north London. The Spain international won’t sign a new contract with Brentford who’ll command around £40m for his signature.

However, according to former Spurs right-back, Alan Hutton, Kelleher might fancy joining Tottenham over Brentford.

Risky Tottenham swoop backed

“I definitely think Kelleher will be assessing his options,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“Whenever he has been called upon he has done really well. But I can’t see him dislodging Alisson any time soon. That is the difficult part, he has to just wait.

“Tottenham are possibly looking at Kelleher as well, another big team desperate for a goalkeeper. That is something he might fancy.

“There always comes a time in a goalkeeper’s career where they have to decide if they want to be a number two or are they ready to go out and be a number one.

“I think he is in that position, he is definitely good enough to be a number one somewhere.“

Kelleher has looked supreme whenever featuring for Liverpool, though it cannot be argued a move would be something of a gamble for Spurs.

Unlike Raya or fellow goalkeeping target Dean Henderson, Kelleher is wildly inexperienced. Indeed, Kelleher’s tally of senior first-team appearances stands at just 20.

Liverpool lock on to ex-Man Utd star

Liverpool’s third-choice stopper is Spanish veteran, Adrian. However, the 36-year-old is out of contract at season’s end and a new deal does not appear to be on the cards.

With options two and three potentially both leaving, Liverpool must sign a new goalkeeper to provide back-up for Alisson.

To that end, German outlet BILD claimed Liverpool will turn to Hannover stopper and former Man Utd star, Ron-Robert Zieler.

Now 34, Zieler was previously on United’s books between 2005-10. He also has senior Premier League experience through his brief stint with Leicester City in the 2016-17 campaign.

Zieler is understood to be the preferred choice of sporting director Jorg Schmadtke who is in line to replace Julian Ward on Merseyside this summer.

Schmadtke has signed Zieler in the past when bringing him to Hannover from Man Utd back in 2010.

BILD concluded Schmadtke has told Jurgen Klopp and co. he can deliver Zieler as a high-class back-up to Alisson as his first order of business.
