Tottenham given hope of record £55m January deal for Lyon star

Tottenham will break their transfer record to sign Lyon star Tanguy Ndombele in January, according to reports.

Mauricio Pochettino was keen on signing the midfielder in the summer, but their £40m offer was rejected, making them the only Premier League side not to add to their squad.

However, the Daily Mirror claim that Spurs are going to return with a fresh bid for Ndombele when the transfer window re-opens, in a deal that would make the 21-year-old their record signing.

Lyon were earlier in the week said to seeking around £70million for the midfielder, who joined them from Amiens for just €8m over the summer.

However, it’s now claimed their stance has softened, with the Mirror now suggesting a fee of around £55m could persuade the Ligue 1 giants to do business for a player, who has just been called up to the senior France squad for the first time. That fee would comfortably eclipse the £36m Spurs paid Ajax for current record signing Davinson Sanchez back in 2017.

Ndombele was also being tracked by Chelsea in the summer in case N’Golo Kante moved to PSG, while Manchester City are also rumoured to be interested after the midfielder played a prominent role in Lyon’s 2-1 Champions League win over Pep Guardiola’s side in September.

However, Tottenham appear to be the most likely to sign Ndombele, who has been compared to their current star Mousa Dembele and is under contract at Lyon until 2023.
